CITY HELD BY CLEVEDON

Truro City 2 - 2 Clevedon Town

There was no dream start for new City manager Steve Thompson as Truro were held to a draw in a game they should have won.

But at least the point at Treyew Road ended a miserable run of four successive Zamaretto Southern League premier division defeats for City.

Former Yeovil Town boss Thompson gave a debut to new signing 19-year-old Kyle Tooze who has joined City from Mangotsfield United, after previously being with Bristol Rovers as youth player.

He lined up on the left up front in a 4-3-3 formation with Les Afful providing width on the right and Andy Watkins in the middle.

And Tooze showed enough in patches that he will be a big asset to City.

Thompson's reign as City boss could hardly have started more disastrously as Tom Billing headed the visitors in front after six minutes.

The tall striker was left unmarked at the far post to pick his spot to head home a deep cross from the right by Joey Evans.

City though were on level terms three minutes later when top scorer Andy Watkins scored from close range after Clevedon keeper Danny Greaves could only parry a Lee Hodges shot into his path.

Les Afful hit the bar before Truro before Marcus Martin headed them ahead seven minutes before half time from Afful's cross from the right.

But right on the interval City keeper Martin Rice, under pressure from Billing, made a hash of dealing with Joey Evans's cross from the right giving Pete Sheppard the chance to hook the ball into the empty net.

It was a bad goal to concede just before the break and gave the North Somerset side a big lift coming at such a crucial time.

And they began the second half well with Gary Colborne heading straight at Rice, while Truro had a big let-off when a defensive mix-up nearly allowed Evans to score but his lob just cleared the bar with a hesitant Rice stranded.

Truro then began to take a grip on the game and Watkins looked to be brought down by Colborne but referee Mark Philpott waved away City's furious protests.

A City goal looked inevitable as they piled forward but both Watkins and substitute Stewart Yetton were guilty of missing the target with only Greaves to beat.

Greaves also saved well from Yetton and Watkins as Clevedon held on for a point and City will now be hoping to get that much-needed win at home to Oxford City on Tuesday evening (7.45pm).
