Match Reaction - Staines Town

Lee Hodges gives his views following Saturdays home victory over Staines Town in the Blue Square Conference South

"It was a big, big win for us and I was ever so pleased for the lads because they have been battling hard but not always getting the rub of the green just lately, so they really deserved this.  I felt at one stage that the game was slipping away from us, so it was really encouraging to see the way the boys fought back into it and secured the points late on.

"I had no qualms about bringing on the youngsters, Danny Carne and Scott Palmer.  I just felt it was the right time to do it;  we had nothing to lose.  Together with Marcus Martin, the substitutions worked.  They don't always.  The other week, I put on Marcus and we lost 5-1;  this time it worked.  Danny got stuck in immediately and made a difference.  He's only 17, I believe, and he did exceptionally well; with Scotty, I just told him to put himself about and he did, including an assist in the build-up to Andy Watkins' great winning goal.  Barry Hayles was tiring and had played a lot longer than I had expected him to.  It was a pity his goal was disallowed;  it was a cracker and there was precious little in the off-side decision.

"Ollie Chenoweth also had a great debut in goal.  We've had special dispensation to sign him on loan from Plymouth Argyle for a month, with a 24-hour call-back condition.

"The first half wasn't great for the fans.  I thought we were a little bit edgy.  We probably dominated the first 20 minutes and then they dominated the next 20.  Nil-nil at half-time gave us something to build on, which is always a plus.  The one disappointment was that once again the goal against was down to our own silly mistake."
